VISUALIZATION '97
BIRDS-OF-A-FEATHER-SESSIONS

Visualization '97 Birds of a Feather (BOF) sessions are held on Thursday evening, along with two special sessions held in conjunction with the Information Visualization Symposium on Monday and Tuesday evenings. These sessions provide participants the opportunity to discuss current topics with others. BOF sessions are open to all Vis '97 attendees. If you wish to lead a BOF, please contact Ed Swan (swan@acm.org). When you arrive at Vis '97, be sure to check the sign-up board for additional BOFs.

IBM Visualization Data Explorer users or anyone who is interested in learning more about IBM Visualization Data Explorer should plan on attending our Birds of a Feather session. We will have a guest speaker, who will discuss development of visual analysis applications with IBM Visualization Data Explorer. We will discuss the application of IBM Visualization Data Explorer in fields such as weather visualization, computational fluid dynamics, medical imaging, business informatics, Geo-spatial analysis, web-based visual analysis and many others. Key members of the development team will present what is new with version 3.1.4 of IBM Visualization Data Explorer and what the future might hold for IBM Visualization Data Explorer users. An open panel discussion will allow everyone to get involved in the discussion. Refreshments will be provided. Come learn more about today's fastest growing visual analysis software, IBM Visualization Data Explorer!

Visualizing Large Data

Thursday, October 23, 1997
8:00 - 9:30pm (Crescent A)

Scientific data is being generated at a pace much faster than our ability to manage and process it. Various efforts have been made by researchers at government agencies, national laboratories, universities, and industry to close this gap. One approach at managing the information contained within this data is to convert it to visual forms that are more economical to store and more intuitive to comprehend.

To accelerate the development of data management and visualization, closer cooperation between individual researchers is needed to encourage exchange of ideas, sharing, and collaboration. Out of this need, the idea of a new forum, "vis-large", was born (http://www.icase.edu/~kma/vis-large).

The goal of this BOF meeting is to determine if there is enough interest and enthusiasm for a separate workshop or symposium devoted to the topic of visualizing large data. At the same time, participants will be encouraged to report on their current research activities in visualizing large data.
