Wersal, and Cheryl McLaurin; Geosystems Research Institute, Mississippi State University, Box 9627 Mississippi State, MS 39762-9627, afernand@gri.msstate.edu Cuban bulrush (Oxycaryum cubense (Poepp & Kunth) Palla) is a floating, epiphytic, perennial aquatic plant from South America and the West Indies that is sporadically distributed in Florida, Louisiana, southern Georgia, southern Alabama, Mississippi, and coastal Texas. It forms floating mats impede navigation and recreational use by obstructing shorelines and access areas. Cuban bulrush is highly competitive and has been shown to overtake other aquatic vegetation such as water hyacinth. To date, there are no published studies documenting management techniques for control of Cuban bulrush. The objectives of this study were to determine the efficacy of 10 aquatic-labeled herbicides on Cuban bulrush control, and to determine if there is a difference in control between pre-flowering herbicide applications and post flowering herbicide applications.
