RETROSPECTIVE ACCESS TO OPERATIONAL U.S. OCEAN MODEL PRODUCTS THROUGH THE OCEANNOMADS SYSTEM
OceanNOMADS is an archive and access system for operational ocean model output, associated with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) National Operational Model Archive and Distribution System (NOMADS). The project is collaborative and distributive: three principal partners each contribute in ways that reflect their individual strengths and missions. The NOAA National Weather Service provides real-time access to NOAA and Navy operational model products via the National Centers for Environmental Prediction. A research and development component is provided through the Ecosystem Data Assembly Center at the Northern Gulf Institute, a NOAA Cooperative Institute. Finally, long-term preservation and retrospective access are provided by NOAA’s National Coastal Data Development Center (NCDDC), a division of the National Oceanographic Data Center. This presentation focuses on the data catalog and services that comprise NCDDC’s OceanNOMADS (http://www.ncddc.noaa.gov/ocean-nomads/), as well as plans for its future development. The current data collection includes several years’ worth of daily operational model runs from NOAA and Navy, as well as NOAA’s recent 30-yr reanalysis. We give examples of data services provided, including basic visualization, spatial and temporal subsetting, and timeseries aggregation.
